Watching the Weather

Posted on July 22, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Florida is closing in on the hurricane season and we all at Savannah at Park Central need to be prepared.  The weather can get pretty crazy here and if we’re not properly prepared it wouldn’t be pretty. That’s the beauty of Florida isn’t it though? With a great location and mostly great weather comes the bad spurts. Remember these few tips on being prepared for the weather!

  • Do as your told- If you’re told to evacuate your area during bad weather, please do as your told and evacuate as soon as you can.
  • Create a Plan- If you aren’t told to evacuate you still need to prepare. Where are you supposed to go in case the weather gets foul? Do you have a central area to go to? Follow up on those questions
  • Supply Kit- Make a kit of supplies; first aid, food, blankets, water… full list

Keep an eye out on the weather and be prepared always

I use Google. Google is very dependable and I love the themes they create on certain days. Of course there are other search engines out there, you’ve got Yahoo and Bing. What do you use? Vote on our poll and let us know what you use!

A Day’s Work at the Beach!

Posted on July 12, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Florida, when you ask a non-resident of our sunshine state what first comes to mind what do you think they will say? They’d comment on Florida’s beaches, the vacation’s spots, the theme parks, and the great view.

Personally I think I got pretty lucky, first I live in Florida, then I live at Savannah at Park Central. We get some pretty great deals being Florida residents and we get to come home to a community.

My favorite activity to do in my spare time is to take a summer drive over to some of the beaches nearby. Many tourists don’t think of beaches when it comes to Orlando, FL. But we’re only an hours drive to the water. A couple and friends and I will go out to Cocoa beach in the morning and spend the day under the sun. It’s a good time. Have you been to these beaches lately?

  • Cocoa BeachCocoa Beach- driving time: about 1 hour, 5 minutes
  • Daytona Beach- driving time: about 1 hour, 7 minutes
  • New Smyrna Beach-  driving time: about 1 hour, 8 minutes
  • Canaveral National Seashore- driving time: about 1 hour, 9 minutes
  • Melbourne Beach-  driving time: about 1 hour, 24 minutes

Slow Cooking

Posted on July 8, 2010 · 1 Comment

Cooking isn’t my specialty, I’ve said it before (BJ’s Restaurant is a Must Try!) and I’ll always admit to it. Though recently I’ve been making the effort on learning how to cook. I’ll be in my apartment at Savannah at Park Central in my kitchen with a cook book in hand reading diligently and taking notes.

While we all cannot be Bobby Flay or Betty Crocker, there are easier ways to mimic their techniques.  Now I know you’re wondering how you mimic a Top Chef and a Top Homemaker?  Easy! You use a slow cooker!

I’ve really become a better cook ever since I discovered a slow-cooker. You literally jam all the ingredients in the pot and like the infommercials say “you set it and forget it.” I think my favorite recipe to make when I’m mimicking Bobby Flay is a BBQ Pork Sandwich. Here’s how to do it using a slow cooker!

Pulled Pork Sandwiches from a Slow CookerIngredients

1 boneless pork shoulder (2 lb.)
3   Onions, sliced, separated into rings
1/2 cup  Original Barbecue Sauce
8   Kaiser rolls, split
8 Cheese Singles
Directions

PLACE meat in slow cooker; top with onions and barbecue sauce. Cover with lid. Cook on LOW 8 to 10 hours (or on HIGH 4 to 5 hours).

REMOVE meat from slow cooker; cut off and discard excess fat. Chop meat into small pieces or shred with fork. Return to slow cooker; stir to coat with sauce.

FILL rolls with meat mixture and Singles just before serving.

Living as a Local!

harrypotterWhen you live in Orlando you have a lot of things at your fingertips. The theme parks especially! Now that I’m older, Disney World has lost a bit of its luster and I’m more interested in Universal Studios Orlando. It’s the rides and the entertainment that has attracted me more. While Disney will always be a favorite of mine, I don’t know if I can visit the Tea Cups as often.

Being a Florida resident has some great advantages, what is it you might ask? Well the discounts to these lovely theme parks of course! At Universal Studios Orlando you can save about $45 on admission! I feel bad for people that don’t live in Florida cause we’re getting such a great deal!

This year I’m going to have to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter! It opened recently and I cannot wait to see Hogsmeade and try out some of the rides. Currently the theme park only has three rides and while right now that isn’t so great I know in the future they’ll open more! There’s another advantage of being a resident of Florida, you can visit whenever you like!

Gardening out on your patio!

Posted on June 29, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Outdoor space means a lot to me, I absolutely enjoy my outdoor space in my apartment. Another thing I really enjoy is gardening, my grandparents have given me the love for gardening. As a child I’d help my grandparents out in their large garden (it was more like playing in the garden). Now I’m older and I have the opportunity to learn how to really grow plants with my grandmother. The time I get with her is great!

She’s come over to the Savannah at Park Central and we’ve spent the day together on my mini-garden. My grandmother has some of the greatest advice when it comes to gardening…she knows her way around let me tell you. If you’re thinking of turning your screened porch into a vegetable or flower jungle here’s how to do it!

  • Where to Start- Start with plants that are already grown, about 4 inches. You can find them at nurseries or your local home improvement store.
  • Covering it up- Before you transfer your plants make sure to cover the holes at the bottom of the containers with small rocks. This helps soil drainage.
  • What’s inside- Fill half of the container with compost. This will slowly release nutrients that the plants need.
  • Watering- Water the plants and let them drain. When you transfer your plants make sure to pack them tightly and fill the gaps.
  • Watering 2- After transferring and moving the plant every which way, water it again and move it to its final position.
  • Summer Time- In the summer water your plants once a day.

dsc0043As mentioned in a previous post, Decorating For your Patio, you can choose to decorate your outdoor space however you like, but I love the garden idea!

Hands in the Sand!

Posted on June 23, 2010 · Leave a Comment

This Saturday, June 26 Hands Across the Sands will be at it again! In hopes to stop dependence on fossil fuels, this organization is once again joining hands across the nation’s beaches, parks and cities to stop the dangers of offshore oil drilling.

Hands Across the Sands was founded back in October of 2009. Dan Rauschkolb the founder organized a statewide event on February 13, 2010. All over Florida people gathered to send a message to their legislators and Governor Crist that they did not want the offshore drilling bans lifted in Florida waters. This Saturday it’s happening again but not only in Florida, all over the nation and the world!

Hands Across The Sand’s mission is to change our engery policy away from its dependence on fossil fuels and into the light of clean energy. The aim is to convince our leaders to abandon expanded offshore oil drilling and adopt policies that encourage clean and renewable energy resources.

HATSThis weekend beaches in Orlando are participating, so you can join hands!
