Surefire Way To Wake Up
Posted on March 1, 2010 · Leave a CommentI’m notorious for hitting my snooze button time and time again. My alarm is so loud it’s defining and I know my neighbors at my apartment hate me for it. To get out of this bad habit I have ordered a Clocky. This cool alarm clock only lets you hit the snooze button once because the second time it goes off, it roles off the night stand and starts rolling around the room. You actually have to get up out of be to chase the clock down to turn it off. If that doesn’t wake me up I’m not sure what will. I’m also interested to see what the dog thinks of this thing. It may just become his new toy. Watch the Clocky go.
The Truth About Soy
Posted on February 26, 2010 · Leave a CommentOk there’s Soy Milk, Soy Yogurt, Soy Bacon, Soy Cheese, Soy Ice cream, Soy Bars, Soy Burgers etc. etc. I’m sure you get the point that soy has caught on as a great substitute for meat and dairy. And while Soy is marketed as good for you there are some things you should know.
Soy critics point to the fact that soybeans, as provided by nature, are not suitable for human consumption. Only after fermentation for some time, or extensive processing, including chemical extractions and high temperatures, are the beans, or the soy protein isolate, suitable for digestion when eaten.
Vegetarians who consume tofu and bean curd as a substitute for meat and dairy products risk severe mineral deficiencies. The results of calcium, magnesium and iron deficiency are well known; those of zinc are less so.
Soy also contains goitrogens – substances that depress thyroid function.
So while Soy had been showing up big as a natural healthy alternative be aware to only consume it within moderation.
Yelp can Help
Posted on February 25, 2010 · Leave a CommentDo you ever go on Google and feel like you just get lost in the sea of results when you are searching for local businesses. It seems like every time I try to search for something local I end up with all of these big national results. Plus how do you ever know which place to choose? That is why yelp is my new favorite search engine. Yelp is a review site that has the listings of lots of local businesses. The cool thing about Yelp is that their reviews go through a filtration system. This way the owner of a business can’t log on 50 different times and give it a great rearview. At the same time it filters those people trying to sabotage other peoples businesses. I use this site whenever I want to find a local restaurant or find a good hair dresser. There are all sorts of businesses on Yelp so check it out today to see what you can find around you.
Aluminum Foil: no longer just for cooking!
Posted on February 22, 2010 · Leave a CommentWe all use aluminum foil for cooking and preserving food but www.realsimple.com has found many other uses for this common household staple.
Aluminum Foil as Wrinkle Remover
To get wrinkles out of silk, wool, and rayon clothes that can’t take direct heat, place a piece of foil on your ironing board, then lay the garment flat over it. With the steam button down, pass the iron three to four inches over the fabric several times. Wet heat radiating from the foil helps smooth out wrinkles.
Aluminum Foil for a Clear TV Signal
If your DVD player is stacked on top of the TV (or vice versa) and the picture is fuzzy, the two electromagnetic fields may be commingling, confusing the signals. (This usually happens with plastic casings; with metal it’s less likely.) Slip a sheet of foil between the machines to separate the fields.
Check out more uses here.
